Building the foundations From floods and fire to damp or redecorating – Aspray franchisees find the work plentiful and profitable A recession-proof business, Aspray is a specialist in managing all types of property repair. Aspray offers a free service to the general public, project managing building insurance claims and refurbishment schemes using local and qualified subcontractors. It aims to reduce the stress for people by offering a one-stop-shop for all their building repair work. James Whittle, co-founder of Aspray, set up the company with business associate Rob Taylor over two years ago. Both bring just the right skills and backgrounds to the company. James has extensive experience in franchising, running the family franchised removals business for 12 years and has since advised numerous franchises, including REMAX and Oakfleaf, on how to expand their network and Rob is a very successful property developer.
Since the UK launch in 2005 Aspray’s 27 franchisees have found the work to be plentiful and worthwhile. Throughout the year, insurance claims offer a constant flow of enquiries from small fires, water leaks and minor structural damage giving high margins and steady income. Then the rain falls and the wind blows. Weather accounts for a huge amount of insurance claims, (the cost of last summer’s floods in the UK alone fast approaching £3 billion and the number of claims reaching 60,000) this is a highly lucrative market. With talk of global warming as it is, this trend looks set to rise. Aspray believe the time is right to expand the network into Ireland and launched the franchise at the Dublin Franchise show. Franchisee experience David Spafford, Aspray Sheffield, helped many residents in June who suffered dreadfully from the floods. In the 22 working days of that month he visited around 40 homes and quoted for almost £262,500/€380,000 of work. ‘When something like this happens it’s not only the buildings that are damaged, peoples lives are affected dramatically. Part of our job is the service to these people in their hour of need. I feel I’m doing something worthwhile, and get job satisfaction from that as well as ensuring excellent repair works are completed.’ With typical first-year turnovers of £350,000/€470,000 and net profit of £51,000/€69,000 possible, future earnings can be substantial. Plus, payments are made direct from the insurance companies so are guaranteed and often made before the commencement of work. How it works If you need to make a claim on your household insurance, as the policyholder the insurance company expects you to get quotations from several reputable contractors. This is often at a time when your home is flooding or your roof is leaking. Ringing builders, plumbers, roofers etc to arrange for quotes is a hassle that you can probably do without. Aspray project manages claims from start to finish by first submitting an itemized building schedule to insurers, liaising with them to progress the claim as quickly and smoothly as possible and if necessary meeting with the insurance company loss adjuster. Once authorisation is received Aspray arranges for the repairs to be completed to the client’s satisfaction.
Aspray team Aspray prides itself on working as a team rather than a set of individuals. It offers a service to franchisees that is second to none. Head office provides full administration and support service, takes all bookings and enquiries, helps with marketing and advertising, provides a full two-week training course and is always available for technical support. Operations manager, David Mackintosh, is available for all franchisees on a daily basis to offer support and technical advice and says: ‘No experience is necessary as full training and support is available. It helps to have a knowledge, if not a passion for DIY, but as it is a service we offer the individual is more important than previous skills.’ |
