How does Leaps and Bounds Work? Leaps and Bounds is a carefully structured physical play programme, designed by Tumble Tots to give pre-school children the chance to enjoy the benefits of physical play in their own nursery setting. It complements children's existing nursery curriculum, and gives parents ideas on play-based activities they can share with children at home. Launched in September 2004, the programme is now up and running in more than 100 pre-schools in England and Scotland. The 30-minute sessions are split into two age groups, ( 2 - 3 years, and 3 - school age) and take place at pre-school settings, either indoors or out. With each session including no more than 10 - 12 children there is lots of opportunity for individual encouragement and attention.
Each physical play activity is linked to a learning objective and is progressive in the sense that it leads on to the next activity in a way which is appropriate to your child's age and stage. The programme is in line with the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage and Guidelines in the Birth to 3 Matters (Sure Start), so parents can be sure that the activities are in line with national curriculum objectives; And it has just been awarded a prestigious Kitemark by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education (PDB). Leaps and Bounds consultant is Patricia Maude MBE* lecturer in physical education at Homerton College, University of Cambridge and author of Physical Children, Active Teaching (2001). "Movement play is crucial to motor development. For young children, the most important medium for movement is Play. Leaps and Bounds provides a structured framework for play, with progressions built into each activity." says Patricia. Ofsted Glowing Report The older children in the nursery enjoy Leaps & Bounds sessions, which provide further variety to their physical play.
